To figure out what went wrong in a major upset, the first thing we engineers will go and look at is the Operator Log Book.

In fact, the operator logs form a crucial part of the overall process picture. Surprisingly, many of us are aware of this and yet we don't know how to make better use of this vital information.

On many sites, the operator logs look something like the picture on the left below. The information is all there but you really need to be a code breaker to understand it.

So what does it take to go to electronic logs?

Actually, not much. You just need a PC in the control room and a "best of breed" package like jLogBook. Here are the improvement you will see.

Why do we put up with incomprehensible, unreadable spider tracks that we have to trek to the control room to decipher when we could be looking at the crisp color-coded operator logs that find their way at the speed of light into our office PC?

Well, usually three main reasons....we didn't know there was an alternative, .... we thought it would be expensive or .... we are just too busy solving problems that electronic logs may just pre-empt.
