Rapid Deployment

What does it mean to you and how good are we at it?

Loading, configuring and trialling a system from scratch is great fun. Yeah right!
Everybody is talking about Rapid Deployment as a solution to this drudgery.

We asked the question:
"So what exactly does Rapid Deployment mean and what are the benefits of Rapid Deployment?"
Once we had defined exactly what it meant, we carried out the Acid Test on our own software.
Have a look at the log of our tests below.

But first:  "So what exactly does Rapid Deployment mean and what are the benefits of Rapid Deployment?"

Rapid Deployment relates to the time it takes you as a system engineer to take a software package, install it, configure it and start getting useful results from it.

The major benefits of Rapid Deployment:

  • Obviously, you don't invest in a lot of time and effort getting to the stage where you can evaluate the product.
  • Rapid Deployment Products are highly automated in the areas of installation, configuration etc. Manual errors are non-existant or minimal not only during evaluations, but for the whole life of the product.
  • Because they are automated, these products allow you to evaluate them by yourself without having to call in Vendor engineers or sales people. (Actually the last people you need to see during the initial phases of choosing a product.)

Now the acid test! Lets see how rapidly we can deploy our software!

We chose to deploy the jHistorian and jBrowser software. Here is a log of the tasks and the time it took. Here goes:

Logged in to the sjsoft.com web site and downloaded the free version. (Used http://download.sjsoft.com)
(I did this overnight. The download screen says it will take between 60 and 90 minutes using a modem connection.)
If I like it, I can download a small license file later that will upgrade me to the 500 tags I need.

  • 9:00 AM Start:
  • Ran the install script on the InTouch computer, started up jHistorian. I accepted the standard sample rates, averages, maximums and minimums. 9 minutes I can change these at any time without stopping the historian!
  • Uploaded the tags from InTouch into the historian. + 6 minutes = 15 minutes
  • Wow! I can see my history being stored in the database!
  • Started up the jBrowser and added a group display + 3 minutes = 18 minutes
  • My data is coming in like clockwork! I can see the trends building up and also look at the alarms as they come in.
  • Copied and pasted the information into a spreadsheet + 4 minutes = 22 minutes
  • Now I can do some manipulations and formatting to create a report.

Done: Total time spent is 22 minutes, I have real time and historical data in my relational database, I can see it in tabular and chart form, I haven't paid a cent and I have done this all on my own!

Let us know what your thoughts are. Is Rapid Deployment a key issue or do you not see it as a major benefit? Your feedback is always welcome!
