Decisions and our Sources of Information

Whenever we make a decision in the process control environment, we draw on three sources of information.

  1. Our internal mental model of the process and also of the equipment that enables the process to operate,
  2. The real-time and historical information that is collected from the data acquisition (SCADA) system and
  3. The information that comes from our operating staff I.e. the operators, engineers, technical personnel and managers.

Over a period of time, the mental model of the process we hold in our heads (1) above, is enhanced and enriched by the live data that comes from the other two sources of information. I.e. the SCADA information and the information that comes from the operating staff.

Quality decisions cannot be made with only half the information
jigsawcomposite2.gif The cost of implementation of the SCADA system is enormous (and ongoing) and you will find very few processes today that operate without a SCADA system of some sort. Whether is a PLC with a screen or a full-blown MES system.

The other vital half of the live information is no less important and yet it costs a small fraction of the SCADA system. Surprisingly, very few industrial sites have any kind of distribution mechanism to get this information to the operating, technical and managerial people who need it. An application like St James Software's jLogBook enables customized operator logs to be collected and coded, and then distributed (in real time) across the site on an Intranet at a very reasonable price.

The point being? That the productivity of any process is determined ultimately by the decisions that the plant personnel make during the course of the day. Let's give them every ability to make the best decisions by supplying them with the full picture of what is happening out there.
