j5 Logbook: More than a Logbook
Many of our customers are now finding additional uses for j5 Logbook
- A new breed of applications
- Why choose jLog for these applications?
- How to create a new application
- How much will it cost?
- and finally, what of the future?
jLogbook was originally designed to replace the paper logs in the control room environment
but many of our customers are now finding that jLog's flexibility means it can be put to work in a host of other situations.
In fact, the jLog software will effectively address any industrial application that requires a multi-user management of information.
In a typical industrial environment, applications that meet this criterion are not only numerous but have been neglected for a long time.
Here are just some of the new breed of applications created by our end users.
- Shift Report or HandOverBook: Shift Report and handover information is now managed.
- WorkOrderBook: Keeping track of Work Orders while enforcing the required procedures
- Inspection Rounds: Managing the inspection rounds on a site and efficiently distributing the information across the site
- ProcessReporter: Combining information from the Logbook and PLC or DCS data into a dail, weeky or monthly report that is sent out on a spreadsheet
- OrderBook: Managing the orders issued by the control room to the field operators.
- KnowledgeBook: Keeping Track of the Knowledge of the corporation and presenting it timeously to the site personnel.
- QABook: Managing the Quality Assurance tests and ensuring the product is according to the Corporate standards
- IssueBook: An interactive electronic Help Desk management system.
- SalesBook: Monitoring the communications with customers and sales prospects so as to optimize the sales and marketing process.
- QuoteLog: Keeping track of quotations made to customers.
- StockLog: Managing the movement of stock into and out of the warehouse and categorizing this according to product numbers.
- Downtime Log: A new application in development that will add logs into the Logbook when the nominated equipment goes down. Operators must assign Reason Codes to each down-time entry.
- Procedures Book: A repository of procedures that are easy to find and easy to update.
But why choose jLog for all these diverse situations?
Surely, you may ask, for these kind of apps, why not whip up a quick VB app or just bung it in a spreadsheet?
Well there are definite advantages for using jLog over "quick VB" or spreadsheet apps. Here are just a few:
- Maintenance: jLog is a true zero client app. This means you load it on a server and there is zero stuff to load on any of the client computers!
- Security: jLog has a complete integrated user management system so that you can control who looks at what and who can modify it.
- Expandability: jLog can happily service hundreds of users ( again..just one computer to watch!)
- High Availability: jLog is a state free application which means it is inherently stable. Also Apache and jServer are fault-tolerant applications.
- Logging Features built in: jLog has numerous features such as date time processing, Filtering, Access Control, Emailing routines etc. already built in. These kinds of features are essential for Industrial Sites.
- Simple Configuration: More often than not.....No coding required!
- Custom Overrides: Where specific behavior cannot be achieved through simple configuration, the custom features may be added without changing the base program.
OK, I have jLogbook happily doing all my operator logs. How can I add another application.
Adding another application is extremely simple: Here is what you do:
1. Click on the wizard icon and click clone (this will create a copy of one of your existing logbooks),
2. Tailor the new fields to the new requirements within the wizard... You are there!
And just as important... what will it cost me?
Logbook licenses can be bought singly or extremely economically in 5, 10 or 20 packs. There is no need to change the software, you just load a new license file.
And what of the future... where will jLog end up?
Undoubtedly we will see more and more diverse applications appearing under the jLog banner. In particular, customers are starting to link their applications to the field. Here we see a close liaison with our data logger application (jHistorian) which reads data from any OPC source.
We are currently designing even more flexibility (and ease of configuration) into our next major release so that we can satisfy an even wider range of applications.
