j5 terminology

Editable/Locked
An editable field may be changed by the user, assuming she or he has permission to edit it. A locked field cannot be edited by any user, clicking on it will have no effect.
Required/Optional
A required field must contain a value before the log can be saved. An optional field may be blank and the log can be saved.
Default value
The default value for a field is the value of the field when a new log is created, before it is saved for the first time.
Calculated
A calculated value is derived or determined by the values of other fields. This value cannot be edited directly by a user, instead the source fields must be edited and a new derived value will be calculated.

Industry-wide terminology

mass balance
A mass balance (also called a material balance) is an application of conservation of mass to the analysis of physical systems. By accounting for material entering and leaving a system, mass flows can be identified which might have been unknown, or difficult to measure without this technique.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_balance
OPC
OLE (Object-Linking and Embedding) for Process Control is an open standards specification for the communication of real-time plant data between control devices from different manufacturers.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLE_for_process_control
pig
Pipeline pigs are devices that are inserted into and travel throughout the length of a pipeline driven by a product flow. They were originally developed to remove deposits which could obstruct or retard flow through a pipeline. Today pigs are used during all phases in the life of a pipeline for many different reasons.
See http://www.ppsa-online.com
PLC
A programmable logic controller or programmable controller is a digital computer used for automation of industrial processes. Programs to control machine operation are typically stored in battery-backed or non-volatile memory. Output results must be produced in response to input conditions within a bounded time, otherwise unintended operation will result.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programmable_logic_controller
Process control
Process control is a statistics and engineering discipline that deals with architectures, mechanisms, and algorithms for controlling the output of a specific process.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Process_control
SCADA
A Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition system collects data and performs non-critical control. Some systems are called SCADA despite only performing data acquisition and not control.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCADA
tag
A tag is a data point in a data source, usually arranged in a hierachy. OPC and Tango are data source standards.
Tango
Tango is an object oriented distributed control system using CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture).
